Department of Motor Vehicle laws in every state require that you pass a vision test to get or renew a driver’s license. While state laws may vary slightly, they typically call for visual acuity of at least 20/40 in either or both eyes, with or without corrective eyeglasses, and peripheral vision of 140 degrees.
Understand Vision Test Requirements
Driver’s license vision screening focuses on visual acuity, peripheral vision and in some states, the ability to see colors. Check the laws in your state, as colorblindness may result in an automatic failure in some states. Examiners use a [Snellen eye chart](http://www.visionsource.com/doctors/free-eye-chart-download/?it=patients/free-eye-chart-download/) to measure visual acuity -- distance vision -- and a computerized machine to test peripheral vision. If you normally wear corrective lenses, bring them with you, as you must wear them during the exam.
Correct Vision Problems Before the Test Day
Get an eye exam from a qualified eye care professional, such as a board-certified ophthalmologist or optometrist before or instead of taking a vision test at your local DMV. If you’re renewing an existing license, your state may be able to provide your doctor with a [form]( http://www.scdmvonline.com/DMVNew/forms/412-NC.pdf) to fill out to prove you meet the vision requirements for your state. This is especially important if you haven’t had a professional eye exam within the past year and may have issues that require correction.
Remember to Blink
Forgetting to blink and squeezing your eyes are common problems during a vision-screening test. Staring at a DMV eye chart without blinking increases tension around your eyes, which reduces vision and leads causes eye strain. Blinking also increases eye lubrication, which can significantly improve your ability to see clearly. According to Dr. Edward Kondrot, a board certified ophthalmologist and homeopathic physician, the keys are to **blink lightly and often and do not squeeze either eye shut during the test.**
Drink Plenty of Water
Keeping your body hydrated helps prevent lack of tear production. When your eyes stop producing tears, dry eye, eyestrain and vision problems often follow. Dr. Kondrot recommends that you drink at least half your body weight in ounces of water each day. For example, if you weigh 120 pounds, drink 60 ounces of water each day. **Start at least one week in advance, as this tactic won’t work if you wait until the day of the vision test.**

Florida Driver License Eye Test
Test Requirements
You can meet state vision requirements without having to visit an eye specialist if you have 20/40 or better vision in each eye with or without corrective lenses. If you have worse than 20/40 vision, you can still get a license if your vision is:
- 20/50 or worse and you see an eye specialist who can improve your eyesight.
- 20/70 in either eye or both eyes with or without corrective lenses after referral to an eye specialist, as long as the vision in the worst eye is better than 20/200.
- 20/200 or worse in one eye but the other eye is 20/40 or better.
After seeing an eye specialist, you'll have to submit a Report of Eye Exam, filled out and signed by the eye specialist giving his assessment of your vision and ability to drive.
Tips
Color blindness does not require special endorsements on your license.
Warnings
Telescopic lenses do not count as vision correction in Florida.

Today while at work I was required to go to the nurse's station, and take my yearly hearing and eye exam. When I first arrived the nurse was at lunch, so I had about a fifteen minute wait. I took advantage of the time, and I went on outside and smoked a quick cigarette. When I returned She was waiting on me. I filled out the usual paperwork, and took my hearing test in the little soundproof booth. I was once accused of cheating on a hearing test in that booth, but the truth be known I was just pushing the button to the music of 'We will Rock You' by the group Queen. To say the least the nurse opened the door to the booth, and wasn't the least bit amused by my actions. I passed the hearing test this time, and next was the eye test.
Now I'll be the first to admit that I can't see as well as I used to, but what happened next blew my mind. I was instructed to read the last line on the eye chart which I could see. I first told her 'E', but she was once again not amused at my jab at humor. This nurse really doesn't have a sense of humor. I then read the lowest line on the eye chart that I could see, and when I finished she told me that next year if I can't read at least that same line then I'll be sent out of here to an eye doctor. I was at first shocked, and later when I returned to my work area, I discussed what had just happened and taken place with my co-worker Bert.
Bert told me not to worry about it, and went on to explain his little secret. Bert said that he just simply memorized the line for 20/20 vision, on the standardized eye chart that is used all over the world, which is - 'D E F P O T E C'. He said he knows it by heart now, and when ever he has to go for his eye test he just recites it from memory. Bert said that he's been doing this a long time time now, and it's better then losing your job. I figure what the heck, I have an entire year to memorize these eight simple letters, and thus the secret to passing an eye exam is now revealed and passed onto to you.
Now you can pass this eye exam with your right eye, left eye, both eyes, or heck if necessary even with no eyes opened. All you have to do is memorize, and remember the secret - D E F P O T E C.
Bert also told me another quick secret for taking a hearing test. He said when your all hooked up in the booth and the first beep occurs count 1,001 1,002 and hit the button. When you release the button count 1,001 1,002 again and then hit the button, and continue doing the same count as you hit the button all the way through till the end of the test. He said he used this method and shocked the nurse with a perfect score. Software download sites.
I would like to reinforce the notion that this isn't a nice or friendly company that I work for. Most bigger companies now a days aren't employee friendly. Let me give you a quick example of just how friendly this company really is. A few years back during Christmas time, a fellow employee called in sick to work. He really truly was sick, but later in the day he started to feel better. So his wife suggested that they try to get some of their Christmas shopping done. While at the store shopping, an armed robbery took place. The security guard who was a husband and father was shot to death during this robbery. My coworker tried to help the security guard, but was only able to speak briefly with him until he died. My coworker's photograph was on the front page of the local newspaper, and he was listed as a witness. The next day at work the human resources manger saw the newspaper and suspended him for three days. This was three years ago and the jury selection in this murder case is taking place now. We all wonder if he'll get another three days off if he's called to court to testify as a witness. Like I said this is a real sweet heart of a company.

I am a nurse and for that exact reason I tell the patient to start with line 7 backwards and line 8 backwards this is how I know if the chart is memorized.
This is way more helpful than annyhitg else I've looked at.
I have one food eye and one lazy eye I hate glasses and can't wear contacts I would hate to have a restrictions on my DL to have to wear glasses just in case I was to get pulled over and didn't have them with me wondered of the DL exam changes or stays the same
Hahaha i love this hub, i've always thought of memorizing the letters at the bottom, i used to try to do this back at school when we had our fitness and health tests. Eventually they kept changing the charts. I still see the letters fine though, so i have no issues. Voted up! lol!
LOL that was hilarious! Awesome hub! I happen to get electronic charts, they use random letters. Once, when changing my driver license I was so nervous I started reading the line from right to left and the lady nearly fell over herself laughing when she realized what I was doing.. I'm glad she found me cute and didn't send me home LOL Sorry you got this 'employee-friendly' company to survive, the thing is - it's a rule not an exception LOL
In case anyone wants to know: the eye chart in the doctors office has one of 2 lines for it's 20/20 line. I have them all memorized after 16 years of doing eye exams. One of them is E V O T Z 2, the other is T Z V E C L, the 20/15 line is O H P N T Z.
There are only 2 snellen charts (eye charts named after the guy who developed them) that are printed for doctors offices that use a projector. If the doctor uses an electronic one, it switches the letters around randomly.
Just tidbits of info :D
hey, that's not fair, At my exam, the doc picked a couple other random lines and I never got to do the last one.
I think I'd rather be aware of a vision problem early. It seems that 20/20 vision as a prerequisite for any job is discriminatory and would be illegal. Since the eye exam is through your workplace, they would have a difficult time denying their practice of intimidating employees to the point where they memorize an eye chart, defeating it's very purpose, in order to keep their job. Bummer!
Very interesting hub. I wouldn't think it would be fair to lose your job just because you can't see the 20/20 line. Getting glasses would be ok if they are needed. I voted up.
I have been blessed with good eyesight but I think I would prefer to know about any problem. Funny hub though!
I wouldn't want to cheat on an eye exam. The only one I'd be hurting is me. I'm about two years overdue for my annual exam, but I never seem to find the time to make the appointment during working housr.
Nothing wrong with cheating yourself! Or is there?
jandee
Enjoyed your hub - great sense of humor - almost everyone would be safe with your method as long as they don't include a memory test - B.
Cute hub-Voted funny-But it wouldn't work with my eye doctor who has a whole varied selection of eye tests.
I agree with what a lot of the other commenters have said, namely that it isn't actually helpful to cheat on an eye exam!
If the person being examined needs contact lenses then it is far better that they get these, instead of being deprived of them because their vision seemed OK - but it was only because they cheated. I've worn contacts for quite awhile now and would never dream of cheating on an eye exam - it would only hurt me and not help me.
Interesting. I didn't know that! I can't see too far and I can't memorize things, so I guess there's no reason for me to learn the 20/20 line! I just need to use my glasses, which I never do! Awesome hub!
Hi, Goody5.
Don't they use those heavy-type specs where you have to look at green and red circles in your eye tests? You can't fool those!
I now have 3 pairs of specs and usually cannot find any of them!!
Ian.
Goody5, People who cheat others realize one day that they have cheated themselves, not others. If you have a problem with your eyesight get treatment. Sometimes, it may be too late to get the proper treatment. Forget about memorizing the line. Go to the doctor before they send you there next year.
Goody5, What an amusing, belly-laughing, entertaining, hilarious, humorous look at surviving yearly annual health checks! What happens at the dental or physical?
Thank you for sharing,
Derdriu
P.S. Which line can Bert really, truly read on his own, without depending upon memorization?
Eye exam secrets caught my eye when I was scanning something to read. I hate those things, they really make you feel your age, at least for me, it's a reminder Im not as young and invincible as I used to be. I recently tried progressives, very expensive too and they did not work. They say some people can't wear them, so now my choices are, bifocal (they make me dizzy and pukey), or three pairs of glasses. Guess you know my choice. Just so ya know, our doc has charts he changes with every visit.
I'm about due for an eye exam. I haven't had my eyes checked in about 3 years and since I spend so much time on the computer thought it was about time. I won't cheat though. It is to my advantage to get stronger glasses, then my vision won't be as blurred. I just had to find out your secret. (O:
There are other eye charts. However, why would you lose your job if you could not see the bottom line? Why can't you just get glasses or contacts? Anyone can memorize the last line, but what if the nurse were to point to a specific letter, what would you do then? I've been wearing glasses/contacts since I was 10 years old. I wouldn't be able to do much without them! Eye exams are not meant to be a bad thing. They are a good way to find out if someone is vision impaired and needs to wear glasses. If you can't see the eye chart, how can you drive safely? Eye doctors don't use eye charts; they have projected eye charts and they switch up the letters every time, so memorizing would not help you there. Thanks for sharing.
I have come across charts with different letters of the alphabet for eye-testing. Some just have the letter 'C' with the gap turned up, down, right or left. May be these people have heard about your colleague's cheating technique.
Lol!Never thought of this idea.In one sense it's sounds like a brilliant idea, especially if this might cause you your job. However, on the flip side wouldn't it be better to find out exactly what the problem is with your vision and then try to get the best treatment or prescription glasses to help you with your vision. Be careful you don't gradually lose your vision.
Well, I want to scold you for encouraging people to ruin the eye exam but I really think they need a different measure of our eyesight that we cannot simply memorize!
